Descriptive Gazetteer Entry for Soham

Soham, market town and par. with ry. sta., Cambridgeshire, 5 miles SE. of Ely, 12.706 ac., pop. 3980; P.O., T.O., 1 Bank. Market-days, Tuesday and Friday. The town dates from a remote period; it had a monastery founded in 630 and destroyed by the Danes in 870, and during that period was the seat of a bishop. An important cattle fair is held in May. Much of the ground is occupied by orchards and market gardens, the produce of which is sent to London, Liverpool, Newcastle, and Norwich.
