Descriptive Gazetteer Entry for Alloway and Alloway Kirk

Alloway and Alloway Kirk, q.s. par., hamlet, and ruined church, in co. and 2½ miles S. of Ayr, pop. 907; was the birthplace of Burns the poet, and the scene of his "Tam o' Shanter." The cottage in which the poet was born, and its adjacent land, were purchased by the trustees of Burns' Monument, for the purpose of being preserved and exhibited to the public.
