Kirkby Stephen, market town, par., and township, with ry. sta., Westmorland, on river Eden, 10 miles SE. of Appleby and 2551 miles from London--par., 33,033 ac., pop. 3157; township, 3135 ac., pop. 1664; P.O., T.O., 2 Banks. Market-day, Monday. The town is situated among the loftiest mountains in N. of England. The grammar school was founded in the time of Queen Elizabeth. Lead, copper, iron, and coal are found in the district, and there are mfrs. of woollen and silk goods. Five annual fairs are held in the town.
