In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Olrig like this:

Olrig, coast par., N. Caithness, 10,015 ac., pop. 2002; the church is at Castletown, 5 miles E. of Thurso; Olrig House, seat, is 1½ mile SW. of Castletown; Olrig Hill, 463 ft. high, is on the SW. border of the par.
