In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Clyne like this:

Clyne, par. (containing Brora ry. sta.) and vil., SE. Sutherlandshire, 9 miles SW. of Helmsdale, 75,614 ac. (1110 water), pop. 1812.
