In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Rother Valley like this:
ROTHER (The), a river of Derbyshire and W. R. Yorkshire; rising near Pilsley, in Derbyshire; and running about 21 miles northward, past Chesterfield, Staveley, and Beighton, to the river Don at Rotherham. It is closely followed, along nearly all its course, by the railway from Derby to Rotherham.
