In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Beggars Bridge like this:
BEGGAR'S BRIDGE, a handsome, one-arched bridge on the river Esk, 1½ mile W of Egdon, N. R. Yorkshire. The erection of it is ascribed to a romantic love incident; and the scene around it is often visited by pleasure parties.
