In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Poyllvaish like this:
BALVAST, or Poolvash Bay, a bay at the SW end of the Isle of Man. It opens between Scarlet point and Spanish head; and is 4½ miles wide at the entrance, and 2½ miles long.
