Horsham  Sussex

In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Horsham like this:

Horsham.-- market town and par. with ry. sta. Sussex, on branch of river Arun, 22 miles NW. of Brighton - par., 11,089 ac., pop. 9552; town, 833 ac., pop. 6874; P.O., T.O., 2 Banks, 2 newspapers. Market-days, Monday and Wednesday. Although Horsham is an old and picturesque town, it has but few historical associations. ...

St Mary's parish church is supposed to date from the time of King John. Corn and timber form the chief trade, and the industies include malting, brewing, tanning, iron and brass founding, and coachmaking. Horsham returned 1 member to Parliament until 1885. In vicinity is Horsham Park.
