In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Gosford like this:
GOSFORD, a hamlet in Kidlington parish, Oxfordshire; adjacent to the river Cherwell, the Oxford canal, and the Oxford and Rugby railway, 4½ miles N of Oxford. Acres, 280. Real property, £449. Pop., 52. Houses, 11. A house of sisters, of the order of St. John of Jerusalem, once stood here, but was removed, about 1180, to Buckland, in Somerset.
