This aspect of the Vision of Britain system presents data from two kinds of source: Agricultural Censuses, which gathered data on the kinds of crops planted and animals raised, usually from farmers; and Land Use Mapping, which actually surveyed land use, field by field. Work on this theme has been funded by DEFRA, the Environment Agency and the Frederick Soddy Trust. Our most detailed information on land use is, in fact, the complete set of the maps published by the Land Utilisation Survey of Great Britain, included in our 'Historical Mapping' section.

Redistricted data on Agriculture & Land Use

These notes concern the historical statistics for modern local authorities, which have been created for Vision of Britain by re-districting statistics originally reported for other units. We have also had to deal with variations in the categories and classifications used in statistical reporting over the years.

  • 2001: The data are as supplied by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM), and were computed using a methodology which allocates all identifiable land features on Ordnance Survey maps into nine simplified land categories: Domestic Buildings, Gardens, Non-Domestic Buildings, Road, Rail, Path, Greenspace, Water and Other. The index is currently experimental.
