PRELIMINARY REPORT

ON THE

TWELFTH CENSUS OF SCOTLAND.

CENSUS OFFICE,
NEW REGISTER HOUSE,
EDINBURGH, 29th May, 1911.

TO THE RIGHT HONOURABLE LORD PENTLAND,

His Majesty's Secretary for Scotland.

MY LORD ,

In conformity with the Census (Great Britain) Act, 1910, the Twelfth Census of Scotland was taken on the night of the 2nd April of this year, and we now have the honour of submitting our Preliminary Report. We append to it Tables showing the population of Scotland as a whole, of its Counties, of its Civil Parishes, of its Registration Districts, of its Burghs, and of its Parliamentary Constituencies; and we further show how the populations of those divisions of the country, as ascertained by this Census, compare with the figures of the Census of 1901.

This Report is largely based on summaries compiled by the Registrars from the Enumeration Books into which the contents of the Census Schedules were transcribed by the Enumerators. We have every reason to believe that these summaries have been carefully and accurately prepared, and that the figures are substantially correct; but, as there has as yet been no opportunity for a thorough examination and verification of the Books, we are not in a position to guarantee accuracy, and it is probable that the figures may require some amendment when the results of the Census come to be fully tabulated for the purpose of the final Report.
