In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described North Berwick like this:
North Berwick, watering-place, royal and police burgh, and par., Haddingtonshire, at the entrance of the Firth of Forth, 5 miles NE. of Drem Junction and 22½ miles NE. of Edinburgh by rail - par., 5067 ac., pop. 2688; royal burgh, pop. 1177; police burgh, pop. 1711; P.O., T.O.,l Bank, 1 newspaper. Market-day, Monday. North Berwick has fine sands and golfing links, and a healthy bracing climate. It was made a royal burgh by a charter of Robert III. It formed one of the Haddington District of Parliamentary Burghs, which returned 1 member until 1885.
