In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Menteith like this:

Menteith, Port of, par. and hamlet with ry. sta., SW. Perthshire - par., 22,238 ac., pop. 1175; hamlet, on N. side of Lake of Menteith, 4 miles NW. of Port of Menteith sta. and 6 miles SW. of Callander; P.O., called Port Monteith; in the NW. of the par. the Menteith Hills rise to a height of 1289 ft.
