In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Glenelg like this:
Glenelg, par. and vil. with quay, W. Inverness-shire -- par., 134,778 ac., pop. 1601; vil., on Glenelg Bay, 7 miles SW. of Lochalsh; P.O. The par. is divided, by Loch Hourn and Loch Nevis, into the 3 districts of Glenelg, Knoydart, and Morar.
