In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Morton like this:
Morton.-- par., Upper Nithsdale, NW. Dumfries-shire, on river Nith, 8036 ac., pop. 2118; contains Thornhill, 2½ miles NE. of which is the ruin of Morton Castle, a stronghold of that branch of the Douglases who became earls of Morton.
The location is that of Morton Castle.
