In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Pooley Bridge like this:
POOLEY-BRIDGE, a hamlet in Barton parish, Westmoreland; on the river Eamont, at its efflux from Ulleswater, 5½ miles S W of Penrith. It has a post-office under Penrith, two small inns, an old stone cross, and a bridgecommanding a superb view of Helvellyn; and it is a goodstation for anglers, and for boating on the lake.
