In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Barnet like this:

Barnet, market town (ry. stations High Barnet and New Barnet), Chipping Barnet par., Herts, and Monken Hadley and South Mimms pars., Middlesex, 11¼ miles N. of London by rail, 235 ac., pop. 4095; P.O., T.O., 1 Bank, 1 newspaper. Market-day, Monday. Here a battle was fought (1471) during the Wars of the Roses.
