Descriptive Gazetteer Entry for Monkland

Monkland, ancient barony, in Middle Ward of Lanarkshire; it nearly all belonged to the mouks of Newbattle, and was divided in 1640 into the two pars, of Old Monkland and New Monkland; the district is rich in coal and iron.
