Settle, market town and township with ry. sta., Giggleswick par., N. div. West-Riding Yorkshire, on river Ribble, 14 miles NW. of Skipton, 4490 ac., pop. 2213; P.O., T.O., 2 Banks. Market-day, Thursday. The town is picturesquely situated at the base of Castleberg, a limestone cliff 300 ft. in height, and serves as a convenient centre for tourists in their explorations of Upper Airedale. The church (1858) is a handsome building. Other buildings are a town hall, musie hall, mechanics' institute, and literary institute. Several thread factories are in the town, which also has cotton mfrs. and tanning. Besides the weekly market there are several important fairs for cattle, sheep, and horses.
