Descriptive Gazetteer Entry for Britannia Bridge

Britannia Bridge, a tubular bridge, on the Chester and Holyhead Ry., over the Menai Strait, between Carnarvonshire and Anglesey, North Wales, designed by Robert Stephenson, commenced in 1846 and opened in 1850. It consists of two enormous tubular ways, made of wrought-iron plates riveted together, and resting on three great piers. The central pier rests on the Britannia Rock (hence the name of the bridge). There are two principal spans, each of 460 ft., and two smaller ones of 230 ft. each. The total length of the bridge is 1841 ft., and its height 104 ft. above high-water.
