Ramsey.-- market town and par. with ry. sta., Huntingdonshire, 5½ miles SE. of Holme by rail and 10 NE. of Huntingdon by road, 16,196 ac., pop. 4617; P.O., T.O., 2 Banks. Market-day, Wednesday. Ramsey took its name from an "eye, or island, in a lake which once existed here; it arose round an ancient abbey founded in 969, suffered from plague in 1666, and from fire in 1731; near the town is Ramsey Abbey, seat; Ramsey Mere, 2½ miles NE., is now entirely drained, and produces heavy crops of wheat.
