BLACKWATER (The), a river of Essex It rises 3 miles ESE of Saffron-Walden; and runs past Braintree, Coggleshall, Witham, and Maldon, to the North sea at Mersea island. It makes great folds in its course; yet goes prevailingly south-eastward to Braintree, east by southward thence to Coggleshall, southward thence to Maldon, and east by northward thence to the sea. Its length is about 40 miles; and its last reach, below Maldon, to the length of 10 miles, is estuary of the mean width of 1¾ mile. It bears the name of the Pant for some distance below its source; and it receives the Chelmer at Maldon.
