Cakemuir, an ancient castle in the detached section of Cranston parish, E Edinburghshire, on a small burn of the same name, 1¼ mile E of Tynehead station, and 3 miles E of Borthwick Castle. It is a square four-storied tower, with massive walls and projecting battlements; an apartment in it is called Queen Mary's Room, having given shelter to that unfortunate princess after her flight in male apparel from Borthwick, 13 June 1567. Here she met Bothwell, and rode with him through the night to Dunbar.
