NEWCHURCH, a parish in the district and county of Carmarthen; on the Carmarthen and Cardigan railway, 3¼ miles N W of Carmarthen. It contains several hamlets, and is sometimes called Llan-Newydd. Post-town, Carmarthen. Acres, 4, 894. Real property, £3, 970. Pop. in 1851, 871; in 1861, 782. Houses, 169. The decrease of pop. arose from the removal of labourersto the iron-manufacturing parts of Glamorgan. There are vestiges of a Roman camp; and a Roman inscribedstone was removed hence to Trawsmawr. The living is a p. curacy in the diocese of St. David's. Value, £96. Patron, John Davies, Esq. There is a parochial school.
