NEATH railway (Vale of), a railway in Glamorgan; from a junction with the South Wales line at Neath, north-eastward up the Vale of Neath to Pont-Neath-Vaughan, and eastward thence to Merthyr-Tydvil, with branches to the Aberdare and to certain collieries, and with other branches and some amalgamations. The original line was only to Merthyr-Tydvil and to the Aberdare, with branches to collieries; and was authorized in 1846. Other small branches were authorized in 1847; new branches were authorized in 1852; the purchase ofpart of the South Wales Neath station, and the leasing of the Briton-Ferry docks were authorized in 1859; theleasing of Swansea harbour was authorized in 1 862; the amalgamation of the Swansea and Neath railway waseffected in 1863; and the amalgamation of the Aberdare Valley railway was effected in 1864. The capital account, at 31 July, 1865, showed receipts of £1, 116,000 in shares, and £370, 633 in debentures. The company has relations with the South Wales, the Taff Vale, the Brecon and Merthyr, and the Neath and Brecon.
