Columns within table:

ColumnTypeContents
row_number Integer number. Sequence number and primary key. NB the occ_1911_lg_t table uses these as identifiers.
order_number Integer number. Number of the Order, from 1 to 23.
order_name Text string (max.len.=84). Name of the Order.
suborder_number Integer number. Number of the sub-Order containing the category. NB not all Orders contain sub-Orders.
occup_level Integer number. Number between 0 and 5:
  1. Used only for the overall "TOTAL OCCUPIED AND UNOCCUPIED" row.
  2. Used for "Retired or Unoccupied (Order XXIII.)" and "Engaged in Occupations (Orders I.-XXII.)" at the start of the table, and for the totals for each Order. However, note that all of the latter have been deleted except for "VIII. FISHING." as no actual data were given for them.
  3. Used for the numbered sub-Orders.
  4. Used for other non-numbered categories which were always reported, and which contribute to the overall total occupied.
  5. Used for more detailed categories which are printed in italics and appear only for some areas. These do not contribute to the overall total occupied, so need to be excluded in simple calculations using these data.
occupation Text string (max.len.=94). Occupation, as listed in the original report.
small_cat_m Text string (max.len.=20). Corresponding category in the table for males in smaller towns, held here as occ_1911_sm_m. The values held in this column generally match the column names used in that table, but some categories have to be merged because of differences in how the classifications are used in the two tables. The more detailed breakdowns provided for textiles in Lancashire and the West Riding are ignored, so the whole of Order 18, sub-orders 1-5 are classed as 'XVIII15'.
small_cat_f Text string (max.len.=20). Corresponding category in the table for females in smaller towns, held here as occ_1911_sm_f. The values held in this column generally match the column names used in that table, but some categories have to be merged because of differences in how the classifications are used in the two tables. N.B. these categories are different from and fewer than those used for males. The more detailed breakdowns provided for textiles in Lancashire and the West Riding are ignored, so the whole of Order 18 sub-orders 1-6 are classed as 'XVIII16'.
sic_div_for_container Integer number. For rows with occup_level = 4, the SIC Division which presumably contains the higher level count for this category, if this is different from that to which we assign the level 4 category.
sic_division Integer number. Number of the most appropriate Division within the Standard Industrial Classification (2007). An additional division, 999, has been added for persons retired or unoccupied.
sic_division_name Text string (max.len.=144). Name of the SIC Division.
