In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Kildonan like this:

Kildonan, par. and ry. sta., Sutherland, on river Helmsdale, 134,550 ac., pop. 1942; P.O.; contains Helmsdale, 9½ miles SE. of sta.; adjacent to sta. is Kildonan Lodge; gold was found in Kildonan in 1868, and for a short time a rush took place to the "Sutherland gold diggings;" the Duke of Sutherland's reclamation works are near Kinbrace sta.
