In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Stow like this:
Stow, vil. with ry. sta., Edinburghshire, and par., partly also in Selkirkshire - par., 36,843 ac., pop. 2395; vil., on Gala Water, 6f miles N. of Galashiels and 26¾ miles SE. of Edinburgh by rail, pop. 440; has a town-hall and woollen mills.
