In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Fowlis Wester like this:
Fowlis Wester, par. and vil., mid. Perthshire -- par., 22,803 ac., pop. 1112; vil., 4½ miles NE. of Crieff; P.O., called Fowlis; in E. vicinity of vil. is the site of the castle of the ancient earls of Strathearn.
