In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Hulme like this:
Hulme.-- township, Manchester par., SE. Lancashire, wholly within the municipal limits of Manchester city, 477 ac., pop. 72,147; 1 Bank; has large cotton mills, also cavalry barracks, with extensive exercise grounds.
