In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Scrabster like this:
Scrabster, seaport vil., in par. and 1½ mile NW. of Thurso, Caithness, on W. side of Thurso Bay; P.O., T.O. Scrabster is the port of Thurso;. the ruin of Scrabster Castle is in vicinity.
