In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Elishaw like this:

ELISHAW, a hamlet in Elsdon parish, Northumberland; on Watling-street and the river Reed, 7½ miles NNE of Bellingham. It used to be much frequented by gipsy rovers; and has some remains of an ancient hospital.
