In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Newstead like this:

NEWSTEAD, a place in Uffington parish, Lincoln; 2 miles E of Stamford. An Augustinian canonry was founded here, in the time of King John, by William de Albini; and was given, at the dissolution, to R. Manours.
