In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Saundersfoot like this:
Saundersfoot, seaport vil. with ry. sta., Pembrokeshire, 2½ miles NE. of Tenby, on Saundersfoot Bay; P.O., T.O. Saundersfoot has a commodious harbour for coal vessels, and is connected with the collieries by tram roads. Coal and iron are exported. A few lodging-houses have been built, and the place affords excellent facilities for sea-bathing. Saundersfoot Bay is an inlet of the sea on W. side of Carmarthen Bay; is 3 miles wide at entrance, and penetrates 1½ mile.
