In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Middle like this:
MIDDLE, a hamlet in Ystradyfodwg parish, Glamorgan; 8½ miles SW of Merthyr-Tydvil. Real property, £6,818; of which £3,950 are in mines, and £35 in quarries. Pop. in 1851,247; in 1861,1,203. Houses, 226. The increase of pop. arose from the extension of coalmining.
The location is Ystrad Rhondda station, but Middle hamlet covered the whole upper part of the Rhondda valley. Additional information about this locality is available for Rhondda
