In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Llandeilo like this:
Llandilo.-- market town with ry. sta., Llandilofawr par., in E. of Carmarthenshire, on river Towy, 15 miles NE. of Carmarthen and 215 miles NW. of London by rail, pop. 1533; P.O., T.O., 2 Banks. Market-day, Saturday. Llandilo occupies a picturesque situation on the precipitous side of a hill rising from the N. bank of the river. The principal trade of the town is in corn and flour; the other industries include woollen cloth mills, timber and saw mills, and tanneries. A fine bridge stretches across the Towy; it was built in 1848 at a cost of £22,000.
