In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Wortwell like this:
WORTWELL, a quondam extra-parochial tract in Redenhall parish, Norfolk; 2½ miles NE of Harleston. Acres, 1,120. Real property, £2,666. Pop., 466. houses 114. There are Independent and Baptist chapels, a national school, a town estate £45, and a poors' allotment £42.
