In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Timoleague like this:
Timoleague, par. and vil., S. co. Cork, on river Arigadeen and Courtmacsherry Bay, 5 miles NE. of Clonakilty and 8 miles SW. of Bandon - par., 2873ac., pop. 880; vil., pop. 435; P.O., T.O. Market-day, Thursday. It has the remains of an abbey and a castle.
