In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Clifden like this:
Clifden.-- seaport and market town, Omey par., Connemara, W. co. Galway, 50 miles NW. of Galway and 49 miles SW. of Westport, pop. 1287; P.O., T.O., 1 Bank. Market-day, Saturday; of modern origin, and much frequented by tourists for the grandeur of the Coast and mountain scenery in the district. Large quantities of lobsters and kelp are exported. Quarries of green and white marble are worked to a small extent. The seat of Clifden Castle is near the town.
