In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Carlingford like this:
Carlingford, market and seaport town and par., N. co. Louth, on S. side of C. Lough, 13 miles NE. of Dundalk and 69 miles N. of Dublin by rail -- par., 19,924 ac., pop. 7687; town, pop. 727; P.O., T.O. Market-day, Saturday. The inhabitants are chiefly engaged in fishing, large quantities of oysters being exported. There are remains of a castle and a monastery. Carlingford Mountain (1935 ft.) rises on the NW. side of the town.
