In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Devenish like this:
Devenish, par., N. co. Fermanagh, 4 miles NW. of Enniskillen, 30,601 ac., pop. 4235; in Lough Erne is Devenish Island (123 ac., pop. 7), on which are abbey ruins and a round tower.
