In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Ballybay like this:
Ballybay, par. and market town, in co. and 9 miles SE. of Monaghan, and 79 miles from Dublin by rail -- par., 8741 ac., pop. 4011; township, 58 ac., pop. 1654; P.O., T.O., 3 Banks. Market-days, Tuesday and Saturday. It has linen mfrs., and an important flax market.
