ROTHERFIELD, a village, a parish, a sub-district, and a hundred, in Sussex. The village stands near the Source of the river Rother, 4 miles W S W of Wadhurst r. station, and 7 S S W of Tunbridge-Wells; and has a post-office‡ under Tunbridge-Wells, and fairs on 18 June and 20 Oct. The parish contains also the hamlet of Mark-Cross, and comprises 14, 733 acres. ...


Real property, £12, 249. Pop. in 1851, 331; in 1861, 3, 413. Houses, 657. The property is much subdivided. The manor belongs to the Earls of Abergavenny and Delawarr. R. Hall, R. House, Crowborough, Brownings, Walshes, Beeches, and Horse Grove are chief residences; and thefirst is an ancient Tudor mansion. A monastery, a cellto St. Denis in France, was founded here in 800, by Berthwold the Saxon. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Chichester. Value, £1, 550.* Patron, the Earl of Abergaveny. The church is chiefly early English; has an open roof of chestnut, and a tower and spire:and was recently restored. A section of the parish, with a pop. of 382 in 1861, is in Eridge-Green chapelry. Achapel of ease is at Crowborough; and there are chapels for-Baptists and Wesleyans, an endowed school with £313 a year, and charities £28.—The sub-district contains also Mayfield parish, comprises 28, 337 acres, and is in Uckfield district. Pop. in 1851, 6, 586; in 1861, 6, 101. Houses, 1, 186. The hundred contains R. parish and the Sussex part of Frant, and is in Pevenseyrape. Acres, 23, 605. Pop. in 1851, 5, 978. Houses, 1,092.
