A vision of Britain from 1801 to now.
Including maps, statistical trends and historical descriptions.
The 1871 census notes that 'in addition to the 6461 acres inserted above as the area of Thornton Dale parish, and 3597 acres as that of Ellerburn parish, land to the extent of 1413 acres is said to be common to certain townships in both parishes'. In both 1871 and 1881, the census lists this area as two separate rows, one of 1405 acres and one of 8 acres. The only apparent distinction other than size is that in 1871, but not 1881, the latter is described as common to 'Farmanby with Ellerburn' rather than just to 'Farmanby'. This is probably just for abbreviation but serves to distinguish the two areas.
